The Love of God 1 Corinthians 13 Elder John (Pat) Young

When we take the subject, “The Love of God,” we are picking up many volumes of
work from the many who have written on the subject of God's Love; for indeed they
are many, yet unable to explain the height, depth and unhindered reach of it into
every heart, mind and soul, of every child of Grace in all ages, times and places,

which God has decreed to love, world without end.

In Corinthians chapter 13, the word love is set forth in an amazingly unique attribute,
by which it perhaps is better explained, than it could be identified in any other way.

Love, in the whole chapter, is set forth being described as Charity. Why is that? That
we take the word love, and find it meaning different things, in different passages of
Scripture, but here Paul wrote this in a way which not only defines the word Charity
as 'agape' love, but 'agape' love in action; and every time the word Charity is used in

this 13th chapter, it means 'agape' love in action. When we alter the Word of God to
say things differently or in a more current expression; we ought to realize, that the
force and impact of many parts of Scripture may be lost, by using other words, rather
than study to understand what is written.

Every verse or group of verses in this chapter, tells us something, which, when all the
13 verses come together, they tell a wonderful uplifting truth about 'agape' love,
some things it does and some things it does not do. So let us just take one verse from

this chapter, and try to gain a little insight about the apostle's thoughts on the subject.
Verse 3. “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my
body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” Let us just compare
this with our Lord Jesus Christ, and how He was sent into the world was, for any

reason other than to do the will of the Father and redeem His elect for any reason, but
that He loved them. Without 'agape' love, there would have been no sacrifice for sin.
And though I give all to care for others, the only thing that makes it godly Charity, is
'agape' love; and 'agape' love is always active, being the only reason it can be

        expressed as Charity.
