Assumptions Cause Problems |

Many of us have witnessed
those who "assume this and assume that" without any real
evidence or proof of their assumptions. The problems it
causes are numerous and often times hurtful. There was a
Jewish group known as the Sadducees who did not believe in
the resurrection of the bodies.
Matthew 22:23-30 relates an occasion when the Sadducees
asked Jesus a question that indicated what they thought
about the resurrection. As they approached Him, they asked
Him concerning words of Moses about the tradition of a
brother marrying his deceased brother’s wife so that his
family might continue (vs. 24). They speak of seven brothers
who died in succession and all married the wife of the first
brother in turn. Then in verse 27, “And last of all the
woman died also.” Then they asked Jesus this pointed
question, “Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall
she be of the seven? for they all had her” as their
wife?
The Sadducees felt that since this woman could not be
married to all seven brothers at one time in the
resurrection (in heaven), therefore they assumed there could
be no resurrection. Jesus told them “Ye do err, not
knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God” (vs. 29).
“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are
given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven”
(vs. 30).
He then put their assumption aside by this wonderful
statement of truth, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God
of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the
dead, but of the living.” Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were
alive in glory, thus putting the Sadducees to silence.
Neither did the Sadducees understand the power of an
Almighty God. As stated in Matthew 22:30, they did not
realize that in the resurrection, it won’t be the same as it
is now in time. The act of marrying will cease as we will be
like the angels who do not marry nor are they given in
marriage. They just assumed without godly wisdom, that
heaven would be some kind of extension of the way it is here
on this earth.
If a doctrine is not taught in the word of God (the bible),
or if it contradicts His word, we are not to believe it. We
are to rightly divide the word of God as stated in II
Timothy 2:15. Let us not assume anything in scripture. It is
the word of God and is “given by inspiration of God, and
is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness...” (II Timothy 3:16). We
know that “if the dead rise not, then is not Christ
raised:..” (I Corinthians 15:16). We know that the
disciples and many, many others saw the resurrected Christ,
thus laying aside all assumptions of the Sadducees and
others who believe not in the resurrection. Until that day,
as the bride of Christ, be faithful to our husband.
