To Every Creature

Elder Mark Green

"He denies that the Lord commanded the gospel to be preached to every creature. What sort of gospel have you got for every creature? Is it good news to say to one sinner, ‘There is no provision made for your salvation; you have sinned by virtue of the sin in you, but God did not love you, Christ did not die for you, the Holy Spirit did not write any gospel for you, and I have no message for you?’ The limited atonement causes these contradictions.”

[I.N. Penick, from his debate with Elder C.H. Cayce in 1907]

Why would Elder Casey deny that the Lord commanded the gospel to be preached, when he used that exact expression? Of course, he had that commandment, and we believe it; but we deny that it means what the Arminians say it means. We deny that by that expression of the Savior meant that preachers are to try to make sheep out of goats or to give life to the dead. Besides, would Mr. Penick insist that the Gospel is to be preached to? Three day old infants or to those poor souls who do not have the mental capacity to understand speech? They are human beings, are they not? Was Mr. Pennock like some sort of deluded Pedobaptist, who wants us to preach to infants, regardless of their capacity to understand? If there is a lack of ability by some to discern natural things, might there be a corresponding lack of ability regarding spiritual things in others?

What sort of gospel do we have for every creature? Why, It is a wonderful Gospel! It tells that Jesus saved his people. According to his gospel, Mr. Penick would say only that he attempted to do that. Paul told the Colossians, be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; We claim to preach the same gospel as Brother Paul, and if it was sufficient for every creature, in his day, we think it is adequate for such in our day.

(Please note that Paul's gospel uncompromisingly included a healthy dose of election and predestination.)

“Christ did not die for you.” Those are Mr. Pinnick's words, not ours; But even the elect are at one point in their lives unable to receive the Gospel. However, Our Lord knows definitely whether or not a man is among the elect, so we can confidently let his words establish Whether or not Mr. P's statement Is true. “I am the Good Shepherd; The Good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). This is as plain a statement as you will find, specifying those for whom Christ died. Jesus died for the sheep. Then in verse 26 of that chapter, in the same context, He says, “But you believe not because you are not of my sheep.”

The conclusion would seem to be fairly plain: at the very least, there were some of those wicked Jews, for whom Christ did not die. Jesus did not give his life for them; He did not die for them; His blood was not shed for them. Therefore, there is indeed no gospel for them. Old Baptist preached the gospel to whomever will listen, but we insist that gospel address is for gospel subjects - and no not everyone is a gospel subject, in this day just as truly as in Jesus’ day.
