God is Eternal

We as Primitive Baptists down through the years have always believed that God always existed, he has always been, he still is, and he will continue to exist forever because he is God. God has no beginning and has no end. He is eternal, that is, he is from everlasting to everlasting, and he is forever.

In Genesis chapter 1, verse 1; "in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." This is not dealing with God having a beginning, but rather it is bringing forth the beginning of God's creation that the eternal God is creating. Remember, God has always been. Also here in verse 1, the word God is used as a plural meaning that embraces God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In verse 26, When God made man, And God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." If God is eternal, the Holy Spirit is eternal, and also the Son of God that is Jesus Christ is eternal.

In Exodus 3:2 we read about God appearing unto Moses in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. As God was telling Moses that he was to go to Pharaoh, and that Moses was to lead the children of Israel out, "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM; and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

The words I AM as used in these verses carries the thought of, To Be, in the sense of Existence, as come to pass, as committed, or as accomplished. In Isaiah 46:9 through 10; "remember the former things of old: For I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me. Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, my council shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Then in this next verse he says; I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it."

We can understand by what is recorded in these verses that God has always been, due to the fact that he declared the end from the beginning. That is, God was already there prior to the beginning and he will still be there in the end. God has declared the beginning, God has declared the ending, and God has declared everything in between. He is the great I AM.

In the first chapter of Revelations, verse 8 we read; "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."  Which is showing that he is present now, which was, showing that he has always been. Which is to come, showing that he will continue to be. Showing that God is eternal, he is forever, and he is from everlasting to everlasting. The same thought is recorded in verse 4; "John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come."

In Romans 1:20 Paul says; "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" Telling us that not only is the Godhead eternal, but also his power is eternal. Then in 2nd Corinthians 4:18 Paul says; "while we look not at the things, which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things, which are, seen are temporal; but the things, which are not seen, are eternal." Oh! How we ought to look at eternal things, for when we look at eternal things, we are able to look beyond the temporal things of this life and see the eternal glory of God.

In 1st Timothy 1:17 Paul says; "Now unto the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, the only Wise God, be honour and glory forever and forever, Amen." Still showing that God is eternal that he is forever. Now in Hebrews 9:14 he says; "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the Eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God."

I will close with 1st John 1:1 and 2; "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; For the life was manifested and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us." I am thankful for the word of God that we might be able to see and understand that the God that we believe in is eternal. That he has no beginning and has no end. That he is God. AMEN
