John 2:5, His mother saith
unto the servants, Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.
This was spoken by Mary, the mother of Jesus, after the Lord
reminded her, not to speak in His place, for what was to be
done, must be by Himself, in the order of His ministry. So,
immediately Mary said to the servants, listen to Him; listen
to your Lord, and my Lord, and whatsoever He saith unto
you, do it!
Here is one of the shortest
and best sermons in the pages of God's Holy Word. This is
not my gospel, it is the gospel of Jesus Christ, and we are
called to preach His word; not to speak for Him, but by him,
to deliver the message. He would have us deliver the same
message Mary gave to His obedient servants. This message is
just as true, necessary and vital to the obedient Church of
Christ today, as it was on that occasion, when they
witnessed the Lord Jesus, as He turned the water in the pots
they had filled, into the best of wine, furnished for the
marriage feast.
It certainly could not be
said, that this wine of such great quality, was so because
of the great job done, finding the pots, and the pureness of
the water that was used to fill them. No! It was so only by
the presence and the will of Jesus. The only part they had
was the same, as the part we have today: “Whatsoever He
saith unto you, do it.” Don't just stand around musing:
“Would you look at the size of those pots we filled?” They
had 18 to 27 gallons in each one, and all that water just
turned to wine! How many times in life do we miss the true
blessings in the service of our Lord, when we try to do less
or more than He told us to do? How many times to we miss the
blessings of seeing Jesus, and the wonders of His presence,
when we are caught up looking at what we have done?
Just do what Jesus our Saviour,
in the Word of God tells us to do; Not more, not less, but
what the Lord says. The real blessing is when He tells us,
His servants, to serve the wine He made, and receive the
blessing of seeing the effect of His goodness.
Whatsoever He saith unto
you, do it! Not saying unto yourselves: “Well the
Scripture does not say, we cannot do this or that.” Prove
it. Just look at your life and all you have done. Do you
find all the times you felt you were pleasing the Lord, by
doing what you thought was right; were outnumbered or
enriched by the times when you felt the satisfaction of
doing something because that was what your Lord said to do?
Prove Him and see!
Bring ye all the tithes
into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house,
and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I
will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a
blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Malachi 4:10
Let us bring all of the ways
the Lord has blessed us into His service, and His Church,
doing what He has told us to do, not holding back, but
whatsoever He has given us to do, do it! Then see how the
blessings that come from His service, provide that abundance
we cannot contain, and how they flow out a blessing to
others who come to the marriage.
