As I try
to study the word seek, I notice first of all, it is a verb,
which denotes action by something or someone, which has the
ability to act. I think this might be a good place to insert
this statement. Science has a law, which says, (Life
precedes action). Based upon this law, we must then conclude
that life must be present for one to act and action is
therefore evidence of life and not the cause. As this is
true in science, likewise this law is applicable in studying
the scriptures. You can expect no action from anything dead;
therefore the scriptures are addressing those who are in
possession of spiritual life. (II Tim. 3:16-17) “All
scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness:” (V17) “that the man of
God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto good works.”
The word seek embraces some of the following connotations.
(Desire-enquire-endeavor-require-sought after). The common
interpretation is to search after.
The first scripture I read brought a flood of condemnation
when it reminded me of my multiplied violation of this
commandment. (Mat. 6:33) “But seek ye first the kingdom
of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you.” Which child of God, when examining
themselves, is not able to see their failures in seeking
first the kingdom of God? The word and is a conjunction and
therefore requires His righteousness be sought at the same
time you seek His kingdom.
Notice, He is instructing us to seek (search after) these
two things first. These two things, in the sight of God, are
to have top priority in our lives. This should precede all
things else they are not first. He was teaching His
disciples in the mountain (commonly referred to as the
sermon on the mount) and these teachings are certainly
applicable to us today. The phrase, and all these things
shall be added unto you, I am convinced is the things
mentioned in (V31) which He said in (V32), the Gentiles seek
after. He told them, your heavenly Father knoweth you have
need of them. Does not He feed the sparrow?
To my shame, I have spent far too much of my life seeking
first, those things that He knew I had need of. I am not in
any manner, advocating we should not work and provide for
our families and have to give to them that are in need, but
merely to reiterate what the scripture is saying. God’s
kingdom and His righteousness should be sought first.
Remember, He is speaking to children of God; those who have
life who are able to hear and seek.
Let each
of us, as we observe many of God’s little children going to
and fro, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, pray for
them and strive to set a good example by putting the things
of God ahead of the things of the world.
(Mat. 6:34) “Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
You notice in (II Chr. 7:14) He began by stating the fact,
He was addressing this message to His people who are called
by His name. Take note that one of four requirements for
healing their land was seek my face. (V13) leads me to
believe that the afflictions mentioned there are things God
brings upon nations in judgment, lest they repent as
Nineveh.
(Mat. 7:7) “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye
shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”
(did you notice the word shall was used with all three
promises)? In (V6), I am convinced He is referring to the
things promised in (V7). He referred to them as Holy and
instructed us not to cast our pearls before swine, lest they
trample them under their feet and turn again to rend you.
Brethren, I am convinced (V7) is speaking of asking,
seeking, and knocking for spiritual blessings. Only the born
again child of God will have any desire or concern of these
spiritual blessings. Once again, life must be present to
act.
In reference to (V6), what do you think the world (dogs)
would do with the precious gospel when it is preached to
them? He compared it to casting your pearls before the
swine. You can only preach at the dead. The spiritually dead
cannot hear the gospel. (John 8:47) “He that is of God
heareth God’s words; ye therefore hear them not, because ye
are not of God.”
Jesus came to seek and He accomplished it without the loss
of one. (There were no conditions in His seeking. (Luke
19:10) “For the Son of man is come to seek and save that
which was lost.” The scriptures declare emphatically that He
did BOTH WITHOUT FAILING.
(John
4:23-24) “But the hour cometh and now is, when the true
worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth:
For the Father seeketh such to worship Him.” (V24)
“God is a spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him
in spirit and in truth.” If this encourages one little
child of God to seek the face of God while on his pilgrimage
in the earth, praise the Lord’s name for it. |
