Hebrews 2:17

Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in
all things it behooved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high
priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation
for the sins of the people.
This morning, there is not a more controversial subject
than the person of Jesus Christ. To some, He is a prophet or
moral teacher. To others, He is the Lord of glory, but to
many, He means nothing to the point of their denial of Him
and His precepts completely. Jesus Christ (as all God and
all man) is certainly a mysterious subject to finite minds
here below, but Paul here lays out some very important
details about Jesus Christ that should lend insight about
His person and purpose. The book of Hebrews as an overall
theme is showing the perfect sinlessness of Jesus Christ
that fulfilled all the types and shadows of the law. Here we
find that Jesus Christ was made like unto us in all things.
Now, certainly the Scriptures are clear that this cannot be
talking about all things without exception, for there is one
clear instance in that He is not like us. When He came into
this low ground of sin and sorrow, He assumed flesh for the
purpose of redemption, but His flesh had no sin in it.
Therefore, this one point should suffice to show that He is
not like us in all things without exception, but He is like
us in all things under consideration. The things in
consideration are mentioned in the context. He was made like
unto us in the fact that He has actual human flesh and
bones, He is naturally of the lineage of Abraham and the
seed of David, and His human body was in all points tempted
like as we are yet without sin. As our High Priest, we had
to have kinship to Him. Therefore, He is not ashamed to call
us brethren, and it is for this cause that He came down to
become a man for the suffering of death. This human side of
Christ is what we can see (Hebrews 2:9), for an infinite God
(while believed in by faith), is impossible for our minds to
comprehend or search out.
Therefore, we see Jesus in this fashion, and by assuming
flesh, He made reconciliation for the sins of the people. It
does not say that He tried or will try again, but rather, He
finished the work that the Father sent Him to do. When
viewing the man Christ Jesus, we ought not think of the weak
and pitiful picture that we so often see, for at this very
moment, He is crowned with all glory and honour. By
suffering our just penalty, we have peace with God, and as
God, Jesus Christ is ruling and reigning right now.
Therefore, since we have been reconciled to God by the blood
of Christ and the death of the cross, we pray you in
Christ's stead be ye reconciled to God. If we know these
things, let us ever look up to Him in gratitude for the
goodness of His grace and seek to align our steps more
closely with His. |
