Let There Be Light

Elder Philip N. Conley

Genesis 1:3, "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

This morning, we continue to see the beginning of a day, band later we will again (Lord willing) see the close of the day. These ordinances are sure by the Lord's promise until He declares the end of this time world. However, man today is still denying that the courses of "nature" were set in motion by an Omnipotent Creator. They attribute some means outside Divine purpose as the active cause in the formation of the universe and all things therein. However, the so-called wise of this world have not the faith necessary to believe this. For, in Hebrews we read that without faith it is impossible to please Him or believe that He framed the world into existence by the Word of His power.

When considering the verse dealing with light, there is no question in this verse as to the sovereign decrees of God. He speaks, and it is done. He purposes it, and it comes to pass. God simply spoke, and there was an immediate response of light shining whereas there was only darkness previously.

Scientists today will use the following argument to bolster their belief of a universe that is billions of years old. "Well, we are viewing stars in the skies from earth that are XXX million light years away. Therefore, for us to see them, the universe must be XXX billion years old or the light from them would not have reached us yet." However, this argument fails to take into account clear Scriptural language that the light pre-existed the current "sources" today. This is the 1st day of creation, but the sun, moon, and stars were not made until the 4th day. So, a reasonable, spiritual mind will conclude that the light was there before the source, and it is no great wonder that we see the stars today that are so distant in the heavens.

Then, one might wonder what the light from the 1st to the 4th day was. It is the humble belief of the writer that the light of the Person of Jesus Christ shined through the far-reaches of the universe as He had part in the creation. He is our Light, and He lights every man that cometh into the world. He is the Light that shines into the child of God's heart that gives them the unction from the Holy One. He is the One that dwells in the Light that no man can approach unto, and He is defined as the brightness of the glory of God. So, God the Father spoke, and God the Son shined forth as God the Holy Spirit moved upon the face of the waters. The entire Godhead actively created this universe, and it belongs to Him! Whenever we start to feel puffed up, let us always remember that we are His stewards that are just staying here for a short while. It belongs to Him, and since He was not required to do what He did (by creating this world), our daily thanks should be to the One that saw fit to create us, redeem us, and continue to keep us until that glorious day when that Light shall come again without sin unto salvation. At that day, we will see Him as He is and know Him as He knows us.
